(4/20/2018) - The annual ABC12 Diaper Drive is among the winners in the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation's 2018 Celebration of Service to America Awards

The awards recognize outstanding community service by local broadcasters.

The Diaper Drive won the Service to Community Award for television stations in a medium-sized market.

In Genesee County, 4,500 children under age 3 live below the poverty line. Because state and federal assistance cannot be used to buy diapers, many of these children are forced to stay in the same diaper for days at a time.

The day-long Diaper Drive collects donations of diapers, wipes and cash to help the Flint Diaper Bank supply more than 1 million diapers to local babies every year.

ABC12's Angie Hendershot helped launch the Diaper Drive 10 years ago and later co-founded the nonprofit Flint Diaper Bank.

ABC12 will receive the award during a gala in Washington, D.C., in June.
