MUNDY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJRT) - Mundy Township has completed phase one of the Miracle Commons Park.

The projected started nearly eight years ago, when the township and a sophomore in high school at the time wanted to bring more outdoor recreation opportunities for people of all abilities.

“This facility was really designed from the ground up to be accessible to individuals from all abilities,” said Mundy Township Manager Chad Young. “Phase one has really been the skeleton, the bones of the facility, we brought in the utilities like water, sewer and electric to the driveway itself.”

The park, which is located next to The Home Depot and Assenmacher Cycle Shop on Hill Road, was carefully designed to allow people with all abilities to utilize the space.

For example, instead of using limestone for the more than two miles of trails, the township paved them so that people in wheelchairs can enjoy the peaceful environment. Now, Young said the opportunities are endless for the rest of the 100 acres.

“We look to have this be not just a facility that stands out and is used and benefits the residents of Mundy Township but Genesee County as a whole,” said Young.

For phase two, the township is working with the Miracle League of Greater Flint, to create a universally accessible baseball field.

Brian Caine introduced the idea to Mundy Township when he was only a sophomore in high school. Now a senior at Central Michigan University, Caine said he’s excited to finally see his idea become a reality.

“There are nearly 10,000 kids who could benefit from a field like this right now in Genesee county schools,” said Caine.

Allowing kids of all abilities the chance to crack the bat.

“We’ve actually seen a couple others pop up one being up in midland and one in the Oakland County area. So we’ve got some near us, but there’s none in Genesee County,” said Cane.

Mundy Township and Miracle League of Greater Flint will be celebrating the grand opening of Mundy Miracle Commons Monday, June 10th, at 4pm with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Miracle League of Greater Flint hopes to break ground on the field in spring of 2022.
